Richard Simmons back Home, Safe and Sound, after Hospitalization

If you know anything about fitness, you surely know of Richard Simmons. For more than 4 decades, he’s been an exercise icon, with an enthusiastic personality that’s helped countless people to stay motivated and lose weight. The 67 year old fitness guru was hospitalized over the weekend, but is now back home, safe and sound, thanking his fans for their concern.

On Friday, June 3, just before midnight, paramedics responded to an Emergency 911 call from Simmons’ home in Hollywood Hills, California. At that time, strange reports surfaced in the media that the 67 year old was exhibiting ‘bizarre behavior’, and there was concern that he may have had a stroke, or was possibly suffering from dementia.

Adding to the concern of some was a photograph posted on Richard Simmons’ Facebook page on June 2, one day prior to his hospitalization (see photo below). Simmons’ was surrounded by a group of shirtless, heavily tattooed men, while he himself sported a variety of temporary tattoos, asking his fans, “Do these tattoos make me look tough?”

Having grown up familiar with the fitness guru for years, I personally see no reason why such a photo would raise concern. Looks like Richard being Richard to me.

Richard Simmons Treated for Dehydration

I’m happy to report that – as usual – the story was way overblown. The beloved workout idol was released on Saturday, and according to reports, was only treated for dehydration. Physicians at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles tested Richard Simmons for several possible illnesses, including stroke and dementia; all of which were reportedly ruled out.

Just two hours ago (as of writing), Simmons’ told all his fans on his Facebook page:

“Thank you to everyone who has reached out with love and concern after hearing I was in the hospital. I was dehydrated and needed some fluids and now I am feeling great! Summer is here – drink plenty of liquids. Big hugs and kisses for caring.”

We All Wanna Get Away Sometimes

A former regular in the spotlight, Simmons became hermetic over two years ago following a knee injury. Reports speculated that his friends and family were concerned that there was more to the fitness guru’s reclusive retraction from the limelight, but according to Simmons, he merely needed to take a break from his celebrity status and enjoy some ‘me time’.

In March of this year, news headlines exploded with reports that Richard Simmons had been held hostage by his own housekeeper, Teresa Reveles. However, the 67 year old exercise buff denied the story, telling Entertainment Online that he was safe at home the whole time, and had not been kidnapped.

He explained that his decision to escape the spotlight for awhile was a personal choice, giving himself time to do things he couldn’t do while touring the country to perform workout classes – something he spent more than 40 years doing prior to his knee injury.

“I love all the people who worry about me,” Simmons said in his usual energetic demeanor. “But it was time for me to take some time to be by myself.” He added that he was home, still working out daily, and enjoying all the things his busy schedule didn’t allow him to before.
