Mother of 3 explains how to ‘HIIT’ the Gym when Time is Against You

Tiffany Bergan has been health conscious her entire life. Working out and staying fit was as important as anything else. Now, with three young children in tow, Tiffany admits she was near to giving up on her passion due to the ultimate time constraints, but she found a way to HIIT” the gym without neglecting the multifarious needs of her family.

Tiffany Bergan's Tabata Bootcamp HIIT WorkoutBergan, who graduated Concordia University in Moorhead, Minnesota with a degree in kinesiology (the study of motion in the human body), is a very busy woman these days. It’s hard to find time for fitness when raising a 4 year old daughter and 2 year old twin boys.

Thanks to the expedient proficiency of high intensity interval training (HIIT), she’s found a way to bring it all together, and help others achieve their fitness goals at the same time. She now leads her own Tabata Bootcamp class in Great Falls, Montana, which runs three times a week (Mon, Wed, Fri) from 5:30-6:00am, before the children wake to demand her attention.

In an interview with The Great Falls Tribune, Tiffany said her struggle to maintain a successful workout regimen began when the twins were born.

“When I had the boys, I had no time to work-out,” she explained, stipulating her desire to “hit training short term and get good results.” Bergan said Tabata Bootcamp proved to be “better for my lifestyle and I wanted to spread the word about HIIT.”

Her qualifications to run such a class are clearly defined. “With my degree in kinesiology, I know the body inside and out.” Having such a keen awareness, she said she “started working out a little differently.”

Knowing that there were plenty more stay-at-home moms out there in the same situation, Bergan decided in late October 2014 to share her morning workout routines with the community by leading the Tabata Bootcamp class at a private gym.

HIIT workouts are designed to work every part of the body at high intensity, cutting down the time it would normally take to achieve the same results.

“We do HIIT training, exercising your body with a fast pace. We do legs on Monday, upper body on Wednesday, and core on Friday. We do 20 seconds on and 10 seconds off (rest) with high caloric burn,” said Bergan.

For those who miss a class, Tiffany uploads the day’s workout video to a website so everyone can complete the exercises. Since the class runs only three days a week, members are also expected to complete their weekly routine with a mere 6-minute HIIT workout at home on off-days. Additionally, all class members receive a bi-weekly body analysis to laud their results.

When asked how she manages to stay enthused, Tiffany said, “I am motivated by the women who come to my class. It is a fun class. I love to see confidence in people as they progress realizing that two weeks ago they couldn’t do this.”

The Tabata Bootcamp classes aren’t just about working out and burning calories. She educates her students on body awareness, proper eating habits, strength, balance, and empowering the mind and body.

“People lose inches around their waist. They strengthen their core. The muscles become nice and tight,” said Tiffany. “We try not to focus on weight, but more on BMI (Body Mass Index). We work on cardio.”

In terms of success rate, she said the results speak for themselves. “People do not want a week off between sessions. They don’t want a break. They want to keep on going.”
