A throng of medical and wellness providers will host booths where guests can undertake free medical screenings. These will include hearing screenings by the Hear On Earth organization, as well as varicose vein screenings performed by the Vein and Skin Treatment Center of Las Cruces.

Health and Fitness for the Ladies

Several of the seminars are geared specifically towards the ladies in attendance, including a presentation on doulas and hypnobirthing by Carrie Chalverus, owner of New Mexico Doulas. Chalverus is a specialist in the field of hypnobirthing, a modern method that teaches expecting mothers to utilize self-hypnosis and other relaxation techniques.

“It’s akin to meditation and Lamaze,” explained Chalverus. “We teach progressive relaxation techniques that expecting moms can practice before the birth, so it comes naturally in the labor room.”

Chalverus went on to detail the purpose and benefits of partnering with a doula throughout pregnancy and labor.

“Most people don’t really know what a doula is, so we’ll be explaining what doulas are all about,” she said. “New Mexico Doulas offers labor support, meeting with mom’s prenatally and learning about their goals. Then we attend the birth and work with the birth team as a liaison of sorts. We have a lot of training in the process of labor and birth, and are able to anticipate what might happen.”

Emergency Preparedness

The Doña Ana County Office of Emergency Management will be represented at the 2016 Las Cruces Health and Fitness Expo by Director David Almaguer, who will be hosting a presentation on emergency preparedness.

“The goal of our office is to perform outreach to as many people as we can, and to let them know about the natural and man-made hazards present in Doña Ana County,” explained Almaguer. “We want people to take a proactive approach to emergency preparedness, rather than a reactive approach. This involves making a kit, making a plan, and understanding shelter-in-place and emergency evacuation protocols.”
